Got an empty or outdated propane tank but no time to wait around? Drop-off services offer a convenient solution to Fuel Life Simply. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key steps, benefits, and things to watch out for when dropping off your propane tank.

What Is Propane Drop-Off?

Instead of waiting to refill your tank, you can leave your empty tank for safe handling or replacement at select Ferrellgas locations. You can find out which of our offices offer this service on our website

Unlike a refill, where you wait for your tank to be filled and returned immediately, a drop-off allows you to leave the tank with the service provider and pick it up later. At Ferrellgas, drop-offs must be made during business hours to complete payment.

Can Propane Drop-Off Save Time?

Drop-off services offer a convenient option for busy schedules. Simply leave your tank and carry on with your day. Please note: drop-offs must be made during business hours to complete payment.

Where to Drop Off Your Propane Tank

Not all Ferrellgas locations offer drop-off services, so check our website first to see if your nearest location does.

1. Check for Signs of Damage or Leakage

Before inspecting your propane tank, we strongly recommend reviewing the general propane safety guidelines. Safety should always come first when handling propane.

2. Close the Valve & Disconnect Attachments

Close the valve tightly and disconnect any hoses or other parts before transporting.

3. Check the Expiration Date

While propane doesn't expire, portable propane tanks have dates printed on the collar to show when they need to be requalified. This guarantees that the tanks being redistributed still meet safety requirements. If your tank is past its requalification date, it may need to be replaced.

4. Find a Ferrellgas Location Near You

We have offices all over the country. You can use our location tool to find out if the Ferrellgas office closest to you offers portable cylinder drop-off. Just click ‘Location Details’ to see business hours, services, and contact information.

5. Follow Tank Drop-Off Instructions at a Ferrellgas Location

The drop-off process is simple:

  • Drop your tank off during office hours.

  • Step into the office to pay for the fill.

  • Return the next business day during office hours to pick up.

When you arrive, you can ask a Ferrellgas team member for assistance if you need it.

Common Drop-Off Mistakes

Avoiding these common errors will save you time and ensure your tank is handled correctly.

Providing a Damaged or Leaking Cylinder

Dropping off a damaged or leaking tank can create a hazardous situation. Always check your tank’s condition before transporting it.

Failing to Close the Valve Properly

Make sure the valve is turned all the way off before leaving your tank. A loose or open valve could cause a dangerous situation during transport or handling.

Transporting Your Tank Improperly

Always keep the tank upright and secure it in your vehicle to prevent accidents. Laying the tank on its side or failing to stabilize it can lead to accidents.

Safe Transport Tips for Propane Tanks

Bringing your tank in? Here’s how to keep it safe on the way:

  • Keep the Tank Upright: Always transport propane tanks in an upright position to prevent leaks and ensure valve safety.

  • Stabilize the Tank: Secure the tank with a strap or bungee cord to prevent it from rolling or shifting during transit.

  • Avoid Heat Exposure: Keep the tank away from direct sunlight or high temperatures, such as the trunk of your vehicle, as excessive heat can increase internal pressure.

  • Separate from Flammable Items: Ensure the tank is not stored near any flammable materials, such as gasoline cans, aerosols, or cleaning products, while in transit.

  • Use Proper Ventilation: If transporting the tank inside a vehicle, keep a window open slightly to allow for ventilation and prevent the buildup of propane gas in case of a minor leak.

Following these safety practices will help make your drop-off experience smooth and safe for everyone involved.

What Happens to Your Tank After Drop-Off?

Once you drop off your tank, we’ll take it from there.

Tanks that pass inspection can be swapped out for new ones. Some locations offer recertification services for portable tanks that qualify. You can see which locations offer these services on our website

Whatever the case, you can trust that every tank is managed with safety and environmental responsibility in mind.
