When the power goes out, your propane system plays a critical role in how smoothly you get through it. The right preparation combined with sound judgement will help you stay safe and comfortable until the lights come back on. Here’s some tips to stay ahead of the unexpected while keeping things safe, simple, and steady.

Make a Plan Before You Need It

Emergency preparedness starts long before disaster strikes. Sit down with your household to create a clear, step-by-step plan that covers how to shut off propane, electricity, and water. Post it somewhere visible with contact info for your local fire department and your propane provider. If you ever turn off your propane, don’t turn it back on yourself. Wait for a qualified technician to inspect your system.

Installing Gas Detectors Will Help Keep Your Home Safe

If you don’t already have propane gas and carbon monoxide detectors installed, now is the time. Choose UL listed models and place them in recommended locations. Detectors are a simple step that provides life-saving warnings when power is lost and danger is silent. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance.

Emergency Kit Must Haves

Build a power outage emergency kit with several days' worth of water, canned food, extra clothing, blankets, flashlights, and batteries. Don’t forget a manual can opener and a battery-powered radio. Staying informed keeps you calm when conditions change.

Unplug, But Keep One Light On

If your power goes out, switch off everything that was running except one light, which will signal when power is restored. That way, you reduce the risk of electrical surges that could damage your appliances.

Power Out? A Generator Has You Covered

A propane-powered generator keeps your essentials running during a power outage. Lights stay on and daily life continues without interruption. It’s a dependable way to stay prepared when the unexpected hits.

Thinking about buying a propane generator? Here's a helpful blog that covers what to look for and some of the best propane generator options available.

Keep Outdoor Appliances Outside

Generators, grills, outdoor heaters, and portable propane appliances are designed for open air. Never use or store them indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages, basements, sheds, or tents. You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, so always use these appliances outdoors, well away from windows and doors, to keep your home safe.

After the Storm, Take a Careful Look Around

If the outage was caused by severe weather, check your surroundings for damaged gas lines, fallen power lines, or shifted propane tanks. High winds and severe weather can move, shift, or damage gas lines and tanks. If it is dark, use flashlights, not candles. Open flames can ignite leaking gas. Immediately call your local utility company or propane retailer if any of these hazards exist. If you’re a Ferrellgas customer, call our 24-hour emergency line at 866-708-8209. We will respond as quickly and safely as possible. Do not try to repair any of these yourself.

Wet Appliances? Check Before You Flip the Switch

A power outage can cause appliances such as a refrigerator or freezer to leak water, or a sump pump to stop working, which may cause propane appliances to get wet. If the appliances have electric components and have been exposed to water, they can create a fire hazard. Do not turn on a light switch, use any power source, or inspect your household appliances while standing in the water. This can result in electrocution.

When in Doubt, Call a Professional

If you suspect any damage, schedule an inspection. That includes appliances, tanks, and vehicles that run on propane. If you’ve shut off the gas supply, don’t turn it back on until a professional gives all-clear.

Clear a Path for Delivery

You may use more propane than usual during a storm, so it’s a good idea to prepare for a delivery afterward. Keeping your driveway and the path to your tank clear of snow, ice, and debris helps ensure safe, on-time deliveries.

Stay Levelheaded When Conditions Aren’t

Emergencies are easier to manage when you stay focused and alert. Listen to official updates. Call for help when you need it. If you're a Ferrellgas customer and smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area right away, then call 911 and Ferrellgas at 866-708-8209. Preparedness isn’t panic. It’s peace of mind.
