Winter Weather Forecast: "Chill, Snow, Repeat”

The Farmer's Almanac, a publication issuing seasonal outlooks since 1818, released its report for the 2025-2026 winter season. What’s coming? Dramatic swings and widespread cold starting as early as September. The coldest outbreaks are projected across the Northern Plains through New England, with the Northwest facing below-average temperatures. Heavy snow is expected in the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and New England, while parts of Texas and the Southern Plains see freezing rain and ice.

Long-range weather forecasts are never exact, but they provide useful guidance for planning. If predictions are correct, this winter will deviate from the 2024-2025 season that leaned warmer across most of the country, save for pockets of severe cold and snow in January.

Your Trusted Propane Partner

Like most weather forecasts, the Farmers’ Almanac predictions come with a level of uncertainty. This makes preparation and having a dependable provider even more important. Choosing Ferrellgas means your propane needs will be met with the highest degree of reliability, professionalism, and safety.

Our nationwide supply network moves propane across the country, helping us ensure access to fuel even during times of peak demand. If you're a customer using our Will Call delivery service, we recommend placing an order when tank levels reach 30%, or at least seven business days before you anticipate needing propane. This is especially important during severe weather as conditions affecting deliveries may be outside of our control. Plus, waiting to fill your tank can leave you scrambling in the event of an early cold front. When you’re ready to order, do it your way! Text ORDER to 573-207-5975, log into MyFerrellgas.com, or call 888-337-7355.*

For greater peace of mind with fewer to-dos, qualified customers can switch to our convenient Auto Fill delivery service. We use industry-leading technology to schedule deliveries based on usage and weather conditions, so you don’t have to think twice. Even better, you can pair Will Call or Auto Fill delivery services with a digital tank monitor, allowing you to see propane tank levels in real time.

Winter Preparation and Safety

At Ferrellgas, we understand winter readiness is about more than comfort. Your propane system is essential for heating, backup power, and keeping daily routines on track when harsh weather arrives. With these simple steps, a little preparation can go a long way.

  • Check your tank level frequently. Cold weather can cause your propane supply to be used faster than normal. Regularly checking your tank level helps you avoid unexpected runouts and keeps your home safe and comfortable when temperatures drop.
  • Keep the path to your tank clear. Snow, ice, leaves, and fallen branches can block delivery access. Regularly shovel or sweep the area and trim any overhanging limbs. If you have an underground tank, mark its location with a tall flag or pole before winter hits.
  • Secure all pets before your delivery. For everyone’s safety, keep animals indoors or behind a fence on delivery day. Having a plan in place before the driver arrives can prevent delays or rescheduled deliveries.
  • Schedule a maintenance check with a qualified technician to keep your system running efficiently all winter.
  • Inspect your generator. Make sure your propane generator is fueled, maintained, and ready for use. Check filters, refill portable cylinders, and test it before the next storm.
  • Propane cylinders should always be stored outside, never indoors. The same goes for outdoor appliances like portable generators. Storing them properly keeps your family safe from carbon monoxide buildup and other risks.
  • Review propane safety. Everyone in your household should know what propane smells like and what to do if you suspect a leak. Refresh your safety basics here.

Energy-Saving Tips for the Cold

Energy costs tend to rise when temperatures drop. Lucky for you, we know a few small and simple ways to get the most out of every dollar. Use these tips from the U.S. Department of Energy to help with efficiency and cost savings during winter:

  • Lower your water heater to 120 degrees F. This warm setting is slightly below manufacturer default but is still sufficient for everyday use.
  • When you're asleep or away, lower the thermostat by 10-15 degrees. Doing this for just eight hours a day may save you about 10% on annual heating bills.
  • Close the fireplace damper when it's not in use to prevent valuable heat from escaping up the chimney.
  • Keep your heating vents clear of anything that will prevent air from circulating properly, causing your furnace to work overtime.
  • Cover drafty windows and doorframes to reduce heat loss. Window insulator kits from your local hardware store are a quick fix, but any heavy-duty plastic will do the trick.

This winter could be one of the coldest yet, but you can rest easy knowing Ferrellgas has your back. We’ll be here with the reliable propane service you deserve—season after season.
